So… I had my birthday yesterday, and I’ve decided to end watching Last Exile, which I started a day before. And at first I was happy, because Dio had birthday
weektoo, but he wasn’t really happy about this… and then I’ve heard this:
“Alvis: But isn’t a birthday something to be happy about?
…
There are several references to Lucciola in the second “season”, so Dio definitely remembers :)
oh and I guess Claus is on this page too.
Last Exile Fam : final thoughts
(spoilers, obviously)

DIO WINS EVERYTHING PEACE IS RESTORED EVERYONE GO HOME NOW
To be honest, I’m not sure what to think. Is it a bad series? Not… really. I mean, the airship fights were pretty cool, but once that was over, there wasn’t a lot that I felt was done well. I guess, if someone hasn’t seen the original Last Exile, this would be an amazing show, but for those that have, Fam really pales in comparison.
None of the characters seemed to be terribly well-developed, except maybe Millia and Dio (I admit to being biased when it comes to the latter). Fam herself spends 20 episodes talking about her goddamn Grand Race like a kid throwing a tantrum, without realizing the implications of the fact that she’s in the middle of a war. Where people die. The lack of casualties in this series is probably a testament to it’s Lighter and Softer approach, but it just doesn’t pack the same punch. I mean yes, that… Augusta lady and Liliana are assassinated, and I understand we’re supposed to see the parallel of the two scenes, but… So what?
In LE, when it came to the final battle, I was scared. You had Mullin and Dunya who were very aware of the fact that they probably would not survive, Lucciola had sacrificed himself for Dio’s freedom, and you saw first-hand what kind of slaughter Delfine was capable of. And what happens in Fam? Nothing. The Chaos fleet gets destroyed yes, but we didn’t know anything about them. The Glacies storyline was pretty sad, yes, but in the end that was just sort of handwaved. Sure, ships were sunk, but it was nobody we were supposed to care about. Even Sorush and Kayvan come back fine and dandy after being blown to pieces.
I’m not saying Fam is a terrible show… It just sort of missed it’s mark. After the HOLY CRAP OMG that was Last Exile, it fell short. I kept waiting for some confirmation as to what happened to Claus and Lavie and the gang, and other than a handful of moments where I was flailing in my chair (OMG SOPHIA YAAAAAAY! OMG IT’S ALVIIIIIS! OMG IT’S THE MECHANICS! YAY VINCENT!), there wasn’t much mention of anything. It was kind of like they threw out a bone or two to those long-time fans of LE, but then kept on doing their own thing regardless.
PRECIOUS BABY ;______________;
